The tissue in the oral and pharyngeal cavity relaxes during sleep, sinks into the respiratory tract and blocks it. Breathing air cannot pass these constrictions or only with strong resistance. This leads to breathing stops. When the body notices these interruptions, it triggers a “start from one’s sleep” (so-called arousals). The muscles become tense and the airways are open again. This process repeats itself many times per night and leads to irregular breathing.

Dentists refer to the advancement of the mandible as “protrusion”, that’s why they are also called “protrusion splints”. The snoring mouthpieces are not only used in dentistry for anti-snoring therapy, but also for treating of so-called “retrognathia” or “retrognathism” (also: receding chin or overbite). Here, the patient’s lower jaw sits too far back and has to be artificially moved forward. Protrusion splints must have a firm fit because they must continuously maintain the tension of the mandible. The splints are therefore attached to the teeth rows in the upper and lower jaws for fixation. Protrusion splints are very common devices and there are many manufacturers.
This can make you snore or make it worse. Sleeping on your side is better, and cuddling with your partner -- “spooning” -- gets both of you on your sides. You also could try sleeping with two or three stacked pillows so you’re not flat on your back. If neither of those works, sew a small pocket between the shoulder blades of a shirt that's a little tight. Put a tennis ball in the pocket so it’s uncomfortable when you roll onto your back.
M27 Closure: Excavators being demolition work on bridge A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is worn while sleeping. It works by holding your lower jaw slightly forward to pull your tongue forward, as it is attached to the back of your jaw, preventing the upper airway from collapsing. As a result, air is able to flow more freely, reducing soft tissue vibration. The device can be used for simple snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea. The cheapest ones are self-fitted after softening in hot water, but the best results (70% success) are achieved from having a specialist dentist fit the device.
