Snoring can be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea but not everyone who snores has the sleep disorder. Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes you to temporarily stop breathing when you are asleep. If you are regularly tired during the day even though you have had sufficient sleep or if your snoring is paired with choking or gasping sound, you may have sleep apnea. A sleep medicine physician is trained to detect and diagnose sleep apnea using an in-lab sleep study or home sleep testing. Sleep apnea is manageable using several approaches including CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), oral appliance therapy and surgery.
TSD mouthpieces allow your jaw to rest naturally, while the MAD mouthpieces hold the jaw forward or in place. For many people, the MAD style is comfortable and very effective. On the other hand, many people find it extremely uncomfortable. There are a number of factors that ensure that each individual’s experience with a MAD may be different. These include personal taste, jaw size, gum sensitivity and facial structure (these devices are almost always one-size-fits-all).

Most people will snore at some time, however loud or chronic snoring can disrupt sleep-quality and disturb others. Particularly when loud, it is often associated with other sleep-related breathing disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

With biblock mouthpieces, only the forward / backward direction of movement is blocked. In particular the blocking of lateral movements by monobloc mouthpieces is problematic: it can lead to temporomandibular joint complaints.

What are the pros and cons of using a TSD? The SnoreRX has very precise adjustment, meaning you can change the settings to suit your mouth. Still, if you have a jaw issue already, like TMJ, you’ll want to avoid MAD mouthpieces like the plague. In that case, the risk far outweighs the reward.
